 History: A Blob fly pattern in the competition fly fishing world has been around since before 2008. The

fishing intensity overseas in the UK has been the focused on the Blob and the Jelly Tot Blobs (translucent Blobs)

are no different since they hit social media in the early 2016. They are a spin off of the regulars

two toned and solid colour patterns such as the Tequila Blob. Blobs have been a mainstay

pattern in the fly fishing competition world for nearly a decade or more. They catch a lot of

rainbows, cutthroat and brown trout in lake scenarios. When arriving to a new body of water,

these Blob patterns are used to cover a lot of water quickly and as a searching pattern they

molest many trout into a quick reactionary strike. Blobs cover the full spectrum of colour palatte

from light yellows and pearl to dark solid colour such as blues. Every colour in the spectrum has

been used in both solid and translucent colours, often with contrasting arrangements of a light

and a dark colour combination. The use of luminescent Blobs is still being researched for specific

low light conditions. This is where the YEG comes into play in the blob world. Y is the yoke, E is

the egg and G is the glow in this pattern. These patterns maybe called Blobs but they are simply a 

spin from the egg patterns that where traditionally tied for decades on steelhead waters. Water

clarity and sunlight penetration will signify a starting point of whether to use solid coloured

chenille or a translucent, plush style chenille. Basically the clearer the water and the more light

penetration then anglers will use more of the translucent colour. The darker the water and the

less light penetration to more solid coloured chenille’s are the most popular choice.
